105+ Wildflower Tattoo Ideas to Let Your Wild Side Take Over

by Sherri Owens

From wild chrysanthemums to spiritual lotus flowers, there are many species for you to choose from for your wildflower tattoo!

I do admit that wildflower tattoos are some of my favorite tattoos to design and ink. This is because they are a fun alternative to traditional floral tattoos and they allow me to flex my creative muscles. I also get to learn about cool new flowers too!

In this post, I will introduce you to the top wildflower tattoo ideas. In addition to showing you the top designs, I will also provide you with some insight into the meaning behind the flowers.

A Note About Wildflowers and Wildflower Tattoos

Before I show you the selection of wildflower tattoo ideas for you to choose from, I do want to talk about what a wildflower is.

Technically, a wildflower is a species of flowering plant that has not been genetically manipulated in any way. That is to say, these flowering plants have grown without human help or interference.

Now, most wildflowers are native to a particular region or country. However, in some cases, these plants were brought from other places centuries ago and eventually displaced the local flora.

Keep in mind that when it comes to wildflower tattoos, people may not always follow the scientific description. People who want a wildflower tattoo may simply want to get a tattoo design of a flower that grows in fields and forests, regardless of if they can actually be classified as wildflowers.

So, if you do want to get a red spider lily tattoo design, for instance, you should know that red spider lilies aren't really considered wildflowers. That being said, if you do love the red spider lily, go ahead and get it as a tattoo!

Most cherry blossoms have also been genetically modified over the years. So, if you think you can get a cherry blossom tattoo as a wildflower tattoo, you would be mistaken. Once again, though, if you want a cherry blossom tattoo, you should go ahead and get one regardless of whether or not it falls under the category of a wildflower tattoo.

The Best Wildflower Tattoo Designs

Here are the top wildflower tattoos for you to choose from:

Wild Chrysanthemum Tattoos

A wild chrysanthemum tattoo design can be the perfect choice for anyone who is down-to-earth or low-maintenance.

This is because, unlike the cultivated chrysanthemum, the wild chrysanthemum is less showy with fewer petals. However, the wild chrysanthemum is still quite lovely in its own right and will make for a beautiful wildflower tattoo.

The cultivated chrysanthemum is typically associated with happiness, friendship, loyalty, and longevity. Nevertheless, I couldn't find such meanings associated with the wildflower chrysanthemum tattoo.

That being said, wild chrysanthemums are believed to have various health benefits. So, if you are looking for wildflower tattoo ideas that symbolize health and wellness, this could be the inspiration for you!

If you would like to keep your wildflower tattoo simple, then a single flower will do. For a more complex tattoo, have a network of wildflower tattoos running down your arms and legs.

What I like about this kind of wildflower tattoo is because there aren't as many flowers, it is a lot easier to ink a bunch of the flowers together and still get a more subtle wildflower tattoo.

However, a lotus tattoo is more than just an aesthetically pleasing tattoo, it can also hold an incredible amount of meaning. This is because the lotus flower is revered across a variety of cultures.

Some people see the lotus and this wildflower tattoo as a symbol of rebirth and self-regeneration. This flower and the wildflower tattoo is also often associated with spirituality and enlightenment.

So, if you have recently had a greater focus on becoming more spiritual or looking past the physical trappings of the world, then this wildflower tattoo can be a good fit for you.

Another reason that the lotus is a good inspiration for wildflower tattoo ideas is because it is associated with purity but in a different sense to most other flowers and flower tattoos.

While some other flowers are considered a symbol of virginity due to their white petals, lotus flowers are considered a symbol of purity due to their surroundings. This flower tends to grow in rather murky or muddy water. Despite this, its petals tend to be quite pristine.

Well, it is believed that this name is in reference to a poem or ballad written by John Gay. In it, there is a woman named Susan whose eyes are black because she has been crying for her lover, William, who is out at sea.

So, if you want your wildflower tattoo to feel a bit more romantic, then this is a great inspiration for your floral tattoo!

In fact, if you don't want to be overly strict with your theme, all the flowers in your wildflower tattoo design don't have to be wildflowers. You can throw in a few cultivated species to mix things up.

Now, there are a lot of different ways to make this kind of wildflower tattoo design work.

If you want a slightly smaller wildflower tattoo, then you may want to choose a single beautiful flower from each species and have this in the tattoo design. If you keep each flower fairly small, you can actually get a really tiny and minimalistic wildflower tattoo.

In case you are looking for mid-sized wildflower tattoos or simply prefer a bit more detail and complexity in your wildflower tattoo, then you can consider a bouquet design.

Here you have all the different flowers in your wildflower tattoo bunched together. If you would like a more elegant appearance for your wildflower tattoo, then you can have the flowers neatly held together with a ribbon.

Or, if you would like a natural concept to your wildflower tattoo, then simply have the wildflowers grouped together. In case you prefer wildflower tattoos with a bit more of a wild element to them, include the roots in the bouquet!

If you are someone who is looking for a larger wildlife tattoo such as a sleeve, then there are plenty of wildflower tattoos for you to choose from. Once again, the right wildflower tattoo for you depends on the vibe and aesthetic that you are hoping to achieve.

If you would like a more organized or delicate wildflower tattoo, then you can take inspiration from winding wildflower tattoos. These wildflower tattoos can wrap around your upper arm, wrist, forearm, or even your leg!

You can include certain features like vines in your wildflower to achieve a more natural winding design.

In case you want to take a slightly wilder or more natural approach to your wildflower tattoo, then you can have longer stems going up and down your arm. These can be topped off with various flowers and create a slightly forest-like aesthetic.

So, even with eclectic wildflower tattoos, you still want to get a cohesive wildflower tattoo as a final result. This means that even though the flowers in your wildflower are of different species, it is a good idea to still make them have a similar theme.

The easiest way to do this is to pick a particular style for your wildflower tattoo and then apply it to all the flowers. You may also want to consider similarities between the colors that you choose for your wildflower tattoo.

For instance, you may want to go with all pastel or all jewel tones just to tie the whole wildflower tattoo together.

Of course, rules are meant to be broken. And, if you have a certain vision for your wildflower tattoo, then you should go ahead and turn it into reality. At the end of the day, all that matters is that you like your wildflower tattoo design!

What is the Meaning of Wildflower Tattoos?

Before I wrap up this post, I do want to talk about the meanings behind wildflower tattoos. As you will have seen above, each wildflower and wildflower tattoo has their own, independent symbolism.

But, what do wildflowers and wildflower tattoos mean in general?

Well, a wildflower tattoo can have a few different meanings. A wildflower tattoo can be a symbol of freedom. This is because, unlike most cultivated flowers, wildflowers grow in forests, fields, and other wide open spaces.

A wildflower tattoo can be a symbol of someone who is free-spirited and lives by their own rules. Your wildflower tattoo can indicate that you aren't someone who lives by the restrictions placed upon you by society.

A wildflower tattoo can also be associated with endurance. This is because there are plenty of wildflowers that grow in rocky terrain or under harsh conditions. Despite this, these wildflowers are still able to grow and thrive.

In fact, they may even adapt to their surroundings, making them even harder than ever. Due to this, a wildflower tattoo can be a sign of how you are going through - or have gone through - hardships but despite this, you have survived.

What's more, you have come out on the other side stronger and tougher too!

A wildflower tattoo can also symbolize being one with nature. This is because, once again, wildflowers grow among various other species of flowers, and plants, and are typically surrounded by all kinds of insects, birds, and animals.

This can also be seen as living life to the fullest - you aren't afraid to be around diverse people and cultures and expand your horizons.

Well, these are the top wildflower tattoos that you should consider for your own wildflower tattoo. As you can see, I have covered a wide category of flowers and you should be able to find the perfect design for you without too much hassle.

Of course, when it comes to your wildflower tattoo, you don't have to settle on just one species. You can choose a variety of flowers. I have included wildflower tattoos for you as inspiration so that you can see what these designs can look like as well!
