Ankh Tattoo Meaning With 185 Majestic Ankh Tattoos For You

by Sherri Owens

The Ankh tattoo is considered the symbol of life, power, and fertility. The Egyptian ankh is a popular symbol associated with ancient Egypt. Most great pharaohs and gods of Egypt are depicted with the ankh hieroglyph.

A lot of people opt for the ankh tattoo done with an image of Pharoah, but my favorite ankh tattoo features the ankh and the eye of Horus that signifies blessing and protection.

The mystery of the ankh symbol is quite fascinating. In this article, we'll be looking at the meaning of the ankh and ankh tattoo with 185 images you can recreate.

History of Ankh and Ankh Tattoo Meaning

The key of life or Ankh symbolizes the word 'life' in ancient Egypt. An ankh tattoo symbolize eternal life, good life, and love.

In Egyptian culture, the ankh is held by Egyptian gods as a symbol of their power to sustain life and raise dead souls in the afterlife. The Ankh is also worn as an amulet for a sense of protection, prosperity, and long life.

The Ankh is an ancient Egyptian symbol that has fascinated many with its various meanings. There are several theories that have been developed to explain the deep meaning of the ankh to the ancient Egyptians and we will be looking into them one by one.

Female Reproductive System

The ankh appears to look like the internal reproductive system of a woman which creates life. In this theory, the oval loop represents the womb, the horizontal cross represents the fallopian tube and the vertical bar symbolizes the birth canal.

This theory on ankhs is further strengthened by the extensive scientific and spiritual knowledge of the ancient Egyptians in the field of medicine. Their scientific knowledge in the area of medicine and surgery is known to even supersede that of the Greeks.

Going by this theory, the ankh represents fertility, femininity, and rebirth.

Symbol For Man And Woman

Apart from the interesting resemblance between the ankh and the female reproductive system, the vertical bar on the ankh is thought to represent the phallus.

According to this theory, the ankh is symbolic of the male and female powers. It also symbolizes harmony and balance between femininity and masculinity.

Symbol Of The Universe

The top loop of the ankh is believed to represent sunrise over the earth's horizon represented by the crossbar of the Ankh. This is one of the ways the ankh symbolizes life since the sun is the ultimate source of energy for all lives on earth.

The ankh also serves to connect those who wear them as amulets or tattoos to nature and the universe.

The Original Cross

This theory explores the chances of the Christian cross drawing inspiration from the ankh of ancient Egyptians.

The Ankh is referred to as crux ansata or cross with handle in Latin and predates the Christian cross. This is one of the reasons some Christians don't believe in the cross. They see it as a pagan symbol that shouldn't have a place in their religion.

Symbol Of Gods

The Ankh is one of the symbols associated with some ancient gods and goddesses. You can associate the properties of any god or goddess associated with the ankh to your ankh tattoo designs.

Osiris

Osiris is the god of the underworld. He is also considered the god of death, rebirth, the afterlife, and agriculture. He is the most powerful god of Egypt in ancient times and his love story with Isis is why the meaning of the ankh includes love.

Isis

Isis is the wife and sibling of Osiris. When Osiris was killed and his body was cut into several pieces by his brother Set. She placed the pieces and parts together and wrapped them to ensure he is brought back to life.

The tears of Isis from the death of her husband are believed to give rise to the Nile river that gives life to the creatures around it.

Anubis

Anubis is the son of Osiris and he ushers the dead into the afterworld. He also helps with navigation to prevent souls from getting lost.

Ma'At

Ma'at is the goddess who personified the concept of truth, balance, and justice.

She is often depicted holding the ankh and this is the reason why the associations of ankh tattoo designs to the properties of Ma'at make sense.
