80 Witch Tattoo Ideas That Will Magic Their Way Into Your Heart

by Sherri Owens

There are plenty of witch tattoos to choose from - from witchy accessories to goddesses, the options are endless!

Like any modern woman I have a healthy obsession with witches. It all started when I was getting my degree in art history and found witches in classical paintings. My interest only heightened when my clients started asking for dark and mystical witch tattoos.

In this post, I will show you the most stunning witch tattoo ideas and explain the concepts behind each of them so that you can curate your own!

The Best Witch Tattoos

Here are some of the top witch tattoo designs to inspire your own tattoo!

1. Witchy Things Tattoos

Did you know that your witch tattoo doesn't actually have to contain a witch in it? Instead, you can get a witchy tattoo with various elements that are associated with witches.

This can include witch hats, brooms, a crystal ball, black cats, moons, crystals, and other things that you typically think of witches using. You can also include symbols for the four elements - earth, wind, water, and fire.

What I like about these kinds of witch tattoos is that it is a slightly more fun and lighter take on the theme. It also makes for a pretty cute tattoo.

Here are some of the designs that you can consider for yourself:

2. Witchy Hands Tattoos

This is another cool and unique tattoo idea for you. For this kind of witchy tattoo, you only include the hands in your design.

See, according to quite a bit of the folklore, witches hands are an important part of casting spells and practicing magic. It is also believed that if a witch's hands are bound that she can't cast her magic anymore.

This can be a great witch tattoo to get if you want a minimalist tattoo design.

Of course, to make the hands look witchy, there are some details that you need to include. The fingers may be long and resemble claws. They may also have bands at the wrists or other jewelry.

You can include just the hands in your witch tattoo or you can have other elements as well. For instance, the hands could be petting black cats, casting black magic, or hovering over a crystal ball - you have complete creative license here!

3. Witch Tarot Card Tattoos

Reading tarot cards is a very old tradition and you will find that a lot of witches today continue this practice. Some do it for themselves while others use their gifts to help the people around them.

Due to this, it is only natural to get a tarot card tattoo for yourself. However, rather than getting a tattoo of a tarot card from the Major Arcana deck, why not come up with your own with the help of your tattoo artist?

Get a tarot card with a witch designed on the face. You can decide to go with a more traditional design or choose to get creative and do something quite different.

In any case, here are the tarot cards that you can draw inspiration from:

4. Traditional Witch Tattoos

Now, I know what you are thinking - there are technically no such things as traditional witches. Well, traditional actually refers to a style of tattooing.

It includes thick black lines and bold colors. This tattoo style also has a rather vintage look to it. So, if you want a classic witch tattoo that looks like it is never going out of style, then this is definitely a design that I would consider!

5. Storybook Witch Tattoos

Think back to the stories about witches that you heard of as a child. What did the witches look like? Well, they probably had a long, crooked nose, green skin, and scraggly black hair. At the very least, some version of this kind of witch was described to you.

So, why not get a storybook witch tattoo for yourself?

One great thing about this concept is that it allows you to get as creative as you like. You can make the witch look like something out of a book or you could put your totally unique spin on it.

This kind of witch tattoo also works really well if you want to keep your tattoo a bit more fun.

6. Sensual Witch Tattoos

If you read through history, you will see that many women were unfairly labeled witches. This name was given to women who dared to be different.

Those who fought for their freedoms and expressed their sexuality. These bold individuals frightened the men of their time and these men could only assume that they were being led astray by demonic forces.

In reality, though, these women, these witches paved the way for the freedom that we enjoy today. If you would like to pay homage to these brave women and to showcase your own sensuality, here are some cool witchy tattoos to check out.

If you want to add another level of sensuality to your tattoo, then consider getting an upper thigh tattoo!

7. Light Witch Tattoos

There are many different versions of witches. And each person chooses to believe in a particular type. Many women choose to follow light witchcraft.

As the name suggests, these are good witches. They are deeply in tune with nature and use only light magic.

These witches will often use their magic to help those around them. They may also use their abilities to safeguard natural elements.

So, what do these kinds of witchy tattoos look like? Well, there isn't just one aesthetic to follow here - you can choose your own elements.

In general, though, these witch tattoos will have a gentle feel to them so there will be a lot of soft curves included here. At the same time, the colors will be lighter.

You can also choose to include details such as light beams, hearts, or elements from nature. At the same time, you can include more traditional features like a crystal ball if you like.

8. Dark Witch Tattoos

Then you have the witches that practice dark magic. For these types of witchy tattoos, go for designs that have a dark aura to them.

The witches may wear a lot of black clothing but green and purple may feature heavily as well. The tools they use may also look like weapons.

While you can choose for these witches to look human with scarier features, you can also include witches that have devilish or supernatural features. This may include horns, forked tongues, tails, or additional eyes.

You can also add symbols like the ouroboros - a snake eating its own tail - a symbol that is found in certain grimoires.

Keep in mind that a dark witch doesn't necessarily have to be evil. They may use dark forces but only because of the power and freedom that it grants them.

In some ways, a dark witch can be a depiction of a woman who lives in a man's world and was simply pushed too far. To protect herself, she turned to darker things.

9. Forest Witch Tattoos

This concept is a little bit like a good witch design but you can add various elements to help create a unique tattoo.

For this kind of tattoo, you should ask your tattoo artist to include different features found in a forest. This includes trees, plants, vines, forest animals, and more. Of course, you can add the more traditional elements like black cats if you want.

Now, with such a tattoo, you may want include a few more supernatural elements. This is because forest witches tend to be quite similar to forest fairies - in fact, some people consider them the same thing.

As a result, you can include anything from unusual eyes to pointy ears when getting this kind of tattoo done.

10. Moon Child Witch Tattoos

Throughout the ages, the moon has been an important part of witch lives and traditions. This isn't too surprising considering that the moon is associated with feminine energies.

Therefore, getting a witch tattoo that is based on the power of the moon can be a great idea.

For this kind of concept, you have a few options. If you would like, you can simply get a new moon tattoo. New moons are associated with new beginnings and can provide quite a bit of power to witches.

You can also choose to get the different phases of the moon - after all, each phase has a particular significance in magic.

One of the more popular options has to do with the crescent moon. This symbol has to do with fertility, life, and death. And, so, it holds a great deal of meaning.

11. Modern Day Witch Tattoos

Wicca and other witch-related practices continue even today! However, the modern day witches can look quite a bit different. This includes with fashion, haircuts, piercings, and of course tattoos.

If you love the modern elements of magic and witchcraft, then you may want to get a more contemporary

12. Burning Witch Tattoos

This can be a pretty grim witch tattoo to get but it is an important design. If you think about it, none of the women who were accused of witchcraft and then burned at the stake for it were actually guilty of these crimes.

Instead, men and their society didn't approve of the way that these women lived their lives. Perhaps they were too good at their healing, too intelligent, or a little too promiscuous. Their punishment for exercising these freedoms in the same way that men did was death.

And, although we do live in more enlightened times, there is no denying that women are constantly persecuted by the media and society. We can never quite get things right - its damned if you do and damned if you don't.

Due to this, these burning witch tattoos can seem especially relevant. Here are some designs that you should check out:

13. Coven Tattoos

While you can be a solo witch, most people tend to belong to covens. This is because as I mentioned, witches have long been women who were misunderstood as a society. They were often ostracized and then had to find people like them to survive - so, they formed groups of witches.

From a magical point of view, covens are also very strong. This is because the witches are able to combine their magic, allowing them to be a lot more powerful. Covens are also better equipped at protecting themselves.

So, as a way to commemorate this beautiful connection between women, here are the coven tattoos that you can consider for yourself:

14. Triple Goddess Tattoos

As you are probably aware, modern witches and Wiccan worship female deities rather male patriarchs. They believe they they get their powers from feminine energy.

The most common belief is that of the triple goddess. Now, while this concept is associated with paganism, the idea of the triple goddess goes back centuries and millennia as it is found in both Hindu and Celtic religions.

In any case, the triple goddess is meant to represent the three main stages of womanhood - the maiden, the mother, and the crone.

On the surface, this can seem like you are buying into archetypes but this isn't necessarily true.

The maiden represents youth and freedom - a time to discover yourself. The mother is learning to care for yourself as well as others around you. The crone is all about the wisdom and experience that you have accumulated as you get older.

If you would like to get a triple goddess tattoo, then here are some of the triple goddess tattoo designs you can consider:

15. Pop Culture Witch Tattoos

If you are like a lot of women, you first learned about being a witch through popular culture. Maybe it was the Sabrina the Teenage Witch comics or TV show. Perhaps it was an even older version like Bewitched.

It could also be that the reason that you were drawn to being a witch was because they were featured as the villains in a show or movie but they were also incredibly cool. This includes the witches from Hocus Pocus or Maleficent.

In any case, these are some really great witch tattoo concepts for you. Not only are they fun, but they can also be a cute throwback to your childhood. This kind of witch tattoo design is also a great way to remind you of where your love of witchcraft first began.
